Join us at the AOM to discuss: Is Social Media a Threat to Democracy? Examining Political, Market and Technological Lenses

Social media platforms are no longer just technological tools or market phenomena-they increasingly shape public discourse, political culture, and democratic stability. From misinformation and polarization to institutional delegitimation, the stakes are high.

Despite this, research in management often overlooks the political implications of social media.

In this PDW, we bring together leading scholars to explore whether the very architecture of social media platforms endangers democracy:

Itziar Castelló (Bayes Business School, UK) – Moderator. Expert in digital communication dynamics and affect in social media.
Carmelo Cennamo (CBS Copenhagen, Denmark) – Expert in platform strategy and ecosystems.
Elanor Colleoni (IULM, Italy) – Moderator. Expert in social valuations and the sociological evolution of social media.
Andreas Georg Scherer (University of Zurich, Switzerland) – Will introduce deliberative democracy theory and the public sphere.
JP Vergne (UCL School of Management) – Will discuss the (de)centralization of platforms and the evolution of digital communications.
