AOM Panel Symposium – Competing for Stakeholders: The Role of Competition in Stakeholder Theory

Stakeholder theory has generated rich insights into cooperation, trust, reciprocity, and value creation. But what happens when multiple firms simultaneously pursue relationships with the same employees, customers, suppliers, communities, financiers, and other stakeholders?

Please join us at AOM 2026 for an interactive panel symposium exploring the role of competition and competitors in stakeholder theory.

    Our panelists are:

    • Jay Barney, University of Utah
    • Doug Bosse, University of Richmond
    • Ming-Jer Chen, University of Virginia
    • Sinziana Dorobantu, New York University
    • Johanna Kujala, Tampere University

The panel will consider questions including:

    Are competitors themselves stakeholders?

How do firms compete for relationships with shared stakeholders?

How do rivals' actions shape stakeholder value creation, appropriation, and relationship outcomes?

What might stakeholder theory contribute to competitive dynamics-and what might competitive dynamics contribute to stakeholder theory?

Rather than delivering formal presentations, the panelists will engage in an interactive conversation, respond to one another's perspectives, and invite audience participation.

    Sunday, August 2
    1:45–3:15 p.m.
    Loews Philadelphia Hotel, Commonwealth D

Organized by Skyler Clark-Hamel and Jack Becker (University of Virginia)

We hope you will join us for a conversation at the intersection of stakeholder theory, competitive dynamics, strategy, and business ethics.
