Please consider joining our AOM presenter symposium, The Political Life of Organizations: Strategy, Legitimacy, and Resistance, on Monday, August 3rd, between 10:00 and 11:30 (EDT) in Philadelphia.
Kevin Curran (University of Amsterdam), Esam M. Boraey (Cornell University), and I (Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University) organize a symposium that tackles how organizations and entrepreneurs navigate uncertain and illiberal political environments. In other words, we ask how political power permeates organizations across different contexts. Our symposium bridges research on corporate political activity, institutional theory, and entrepreneurship in illiberal and transitional settings.
We will have four exciting papers:
- The first paper, Managing Under Illiberalism: A Constitutive Review, studies the management and related literatures to shed light on the challenges illiberalism creates for firms and the strategic responses they employ. Authors: Wenjie Liu (City University of Hong Kong), Pursey Heugens (Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University), and me (Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University).
- The second paper, Corporate Political Stances and Employee Turnover, shifts attention to the politics within organizations in democratic contexts by studying employee responses to corporate opposition to North Carolina's 2016 HB2 "bathroom bill". Authors: James White (University of Maryland), Reuben Hurst (University of Maryland), and Max Kagan (Columbia Business School).
- The third paper, Organizing under Occupation: How Political Context Shapes the Returns to Formalization in Palestinian Entrepreneurship, asks how entrepreneurs organize their firms under regimes of uncertainty and repression by drawing on a field experiment comparing Palestinian-owned SMEs in the West Bank, Gaza, and Jordan. Authors: Ryan Coles (University of Connecticut), Peter Goggins (University of Connecticut), and Marvin Maldonado (University of Connecticut)
- The fourth paper, Corporate Political Strategies in Emerging Economies: The Role of Informal Networks in Egyptian Business-Government Relations, examines how Egyptian firms rely on personal connections and informal institutions (such as wasta) to secure influence and manage regulatory risk. Authors: Esam M. Boraey (Cornell University) and Ahmed Adel Tantawi (Sheffield Hallam University).
Our keynote speaker is Wesley Sine (Cornell University), and the discussion will be led by Arielle M. Newman (Syracuse University).
