ENGAGED SCHOLARSHIP: HOW CAN RESEARCH AND RESEARCHERS BRIDGE DIVIDES IN A POLARISED WORLD?
As scholars in business and society, we have been aware since long before it became popular that we have a key role to play in promoting understanding, debate and evidence-based research on social and environmental topics at the intersection of business and society. As environmental degradation, global warming, social injustice and other business and society issues have proliferated in scale and salience, we have increasingly also found our research dismissed, discredited and disparaged, with peer reviewed research and scientific facts no longer viewed as definitive but rather as opinions or personally held views by an intellectual elite. As scholars we are used to having our work challenged, questioned and interrogated but often with a view to improve it rather than simply dismiss it. An increased polarisation of views, often proliferated on social platforms has however made it clear that important schisms exist around key business and society issues that we must address if we are to make progress on these issues. The theme is designed to encourage reflections on both current issues that polarise such as e.g. the 'war on woke', the increasingly critical dismantling of ESG, climate change denial, anti-vaxx challenges, LGBTQ+ rights, political lobbying, social movements, human rights and ethics but also global socioeconomic challenges that has the potential to divide such as the increasing cost of living, recessionary pressures and its implications for the business and society field. We encourage reflection both on these as distinct scholarly topics, but also work those centres on how we can contribute to bridging the divide and challenge our own thinking without letting go of scientific and research rigor.
Submissions do not have to be on any of those themes but must have a link to the Business and Society research agenda, broadly defined.
Proposals are invited for the following session types:
Papers: Topics related to business & society using a variety of research paradigms. (3-5 page Abstract)
Symposia: Can focus on a particular area of business and society research or on a specific teaching-related topic. (3-5 page Abstract)
Workshops: Working meetings that focus on a specific research or teaching challenge. (3-5 page Abstract)
Innovative sessions: Activities/experiential exercises that facilitate reflection on the relationship between business and society. (3-5 page Abstract)
Discussions: Author(s) share an idea that is in the early to middle stages of development but is not yet paper-ready. (1-page Abstract)
All proposals should be single spaced with numbered pages, and will be peer-reviewed, though reviews for symposia and workshop proposals, which include submitters' names, will not be blind reviewed. Any named author who provides contact details on any submission may be contacted with a view to review a submission.

CONFERENCE HOTEL (IF OF INTEREST):
We are delighted that the Bath Hilton Double Tree hotel is our hotel of choice. We have negotiated a meaningful discount on their best rate. This means that there may be some variability in the price each individual pays depending on when you book, but you will receive the same discount (15%) but their best rate may vary. The rate you pay includes breakfast and free WiFi. Do please note that the cancellation is a little longer than normal, so if you wish to have a refund, the cancellation is 21days. Do please read the small print when you book. The hotel is located in the centre of Bath and is walking distance to shops, cafes, museums and restaurants. It is also a short walk from the drinks reception venue and the dinner venue for Saturday night. It is also walking distance from the bus that will take you to the university, which is where the conference workshops, sessions and meetings will take place. As such, the Hilton is the preferred conference partner but is not the conference venue. For early career researchers and others seeking budget travel there are other options in Bath.
The rates are valid June 5 2023 – June 11 2023. The web site can take a little while to load, so do leave it a few seconds as it calculates the rates.
