Title: Exploring and Expanding Research on Corporate Responsibility
Abstract: While "corporate social responsibility" may seem – particularly to management scholars – like a familiar and well-defined concept, it is often used narrowly to refer to sustainability and diversity initiatives. However, a firm's "responsibility" may extend well beyond just one or two issues, encompassing a more complex realm of duty and obligation. Looking to the future, we propose to view business responsibility not as a static concept or set of initiatives but as a dynamic, evolving, and subjective process. The papers showcased at this symposium, explore important topics such as the conditions under which firms take more localized, customized approaches to corporate social responsibilities and the strategic implications of doing so; how firms adapt their behavior in response to media scrutiny of peer firms; and how firms' way of understanding their responsibility influence how they engage with sociopolitical issues. To complement our paper presentations, we will also have a panel discussion which will engage with existing literature and explore questions related to the areas of environmental, fiscal, political, and social responsibility.
