We are closing our Ethics in Business Seminar Series for the academic year with a conversation you will not want to miss.
On Thursday, April 30 at 4:00 pm ET, Robert Audi (University of Notre Dame), one of the most distinguished moral philosophers of our generation, joins us to tackle a question that cuts to the foundations of how we do business ethics: can virtue ethics and rule ethics actually live together, or are they rival visions of the moral life? Can the two traditions be reconciled, and if so, what does that mean for the way we actually run organizations?
The seminar will be held in person at the Rose Hill Campus, Collins Hall, with Zoom available for virtual attendees. Please kindly RSVP here.
A short bio and the full abstract are below. We hope to see you at Rose Hill, or on Zoom, for what promises to be a fitting capstone to the year.
Warmly,
Miguel

hereAbstract
This presentation will offer a conception of virtue ethics and rule ethics as contrasting approaches in ethics and as different ways of guiding business practices. Among the questions covered are what constitutes a virtue, how moral virtues are related to moral rules, and whether the two approaches to ethics, centering on virtue or on rules, are compatible. This will take us into questions of how each theory can be applied in the management of business practices. Some individual virtues will be considered, including veracity, loyalty, courage, and integrity. Some moral rules will also be described, particularly those requiring the avoidance of harm, the production of good, and the treatment of others with respect. In the light of what emerges, we will consider whether virtue ethics and rule ethics are compatible in the moral standards and business practices they support.
