*External Research Funding: Best Practices and Untold Truths* 💡
Friday, July 25, 2025; 09:00 – 10:30 CEST (GMT+2); Location: Bella Center: Hall A- A1-m8
Abstract: In recent years, many universities have tightened their research budgets, intensifying the demand for scholars to secure external funding to support their research agendas. Since government and charitable funders often prioritize research projects that offer insights relevant to management and society at large, scholars addressing major societal challenges may be well-positioned to secure initial support. However, beyond potential assistance with administrative tasks, scholars often receive limited support from their institutions in how to approach respective demands strategically and how to navigate related risks and challenges. This workshop thus aims to provide a platform for discussing key questions to ask when considering the securing of external research funding, comparing different funding avenues, and for sharing best practices of handling external funded projects successfully. The workshop will begin by introducing a range of project examples in the field of cross-sector partnerships, illustrating the variety of approaches to seeking external funding. Participants will then benefit from insights shared by experienced scholars reflecting on the main challenges and lessons encountered. Finally, through breakout discussions, participants will have the opportunity to explore key questions related to (a) strategically approaching external funding, (b) considering different funding options, and (c) managing the project life cycle.
