R:ETRO Seminar Series
Reputation: Ethics, Trust, and Relationships at OxfordOxford University Centre for Corporate Reputation
Saïd Business School
Dear All,
Please join us online on Tuesday, 21 May, at 4pm BST, for the third R:ETRO seminar of this term, hosted by the Oxford University Centre for Corporate Reputation.
David Silver (Sauder School of Business) will be giving a paper entitled "Business Ethics, Democracy and Social Trust."
Abstract:
There is a recurring worry among supporters of the free-market system that the business community is losing the trust of the public, and that this loss represents an existential threat. Some theorists have diagnosed the source of this loss of public trust as arising from the behavior of the business community, and in response have urged it to adopt new ethical standards. This talk contributes to this tradition in two ways. First, it claims that the business community is losing public trust because it is failing to honor a distinct set of duties that it owes to democratic society. Second, it argues that the business community's failure to carry out these democratic duties not only threatens to undermine social trust in the free-market system, but more broadly to undermine social trust in liberal democratic institutions and values.
