R:ETRO Seminar Series
Reputation: Ethics, Trust, and Relationships at OxfordOxford University Centre for Corporate Reputation
Saïd Business School
Dear All,
Please join us online on Monday, 12 June, at 4pm BST, for the final R:ETRO seminar of this term, hosted by the Oxford University Centre for Corporate Reputation.
Lauren McCarthy (Bayes Business School) will be giving a paper entitled "Misogyny: Its Unspoken Presence in Organisation Studies."
Abstract:
Misogyny is a significant but unspoken presence in organisation studies. We argue that we should dare to speak its name for two reasons: First, misogyny provides a linguistic label for experiences of gendered hatred and violence, and second, it enables analysis, understanding, and challenges to the physical or symbolic violence that women experience in and around organisations. Drawing on recent developments in feminist analytic philosophy and sociology, we develop two related concepts: organised and organisational misogyny. We note the potential of talking about misogyny for our understanding of organisational life in individual experiences, collective affect, and as an influential social force. Despite the discomfort produced by hate-based concepts such as misogyny, we conclude that their exclusion from organisation studies has two effects: the reproduction of violent hostility, and acceptance of a partial account of multiple forms of oppression and inequality.
