R:ETRO Seminar Series
Reputation: Ethics, Trust, and Relationships at OxfordOxford University Centre for Corporate Reputation
Saïd Business School
Dear All,
Please join us online on Wednesday, 26 April, at 4pm BST, for the first R:ETRO seminar of this term, hosted by the Oxford University Centre for Corporate Reputation.
Miguel Alzola (Fordham University) will be giving a paper entitled "Who cannot cast the first stone: the practice of blame in the workplace (and elsewhere)."
Abstract:
It is widely believed that if a person is blameworthy for having done something wrong, then everyone may blame her for that action. According to that view, anyone can blame every wrongdoer for every wrong. However, our moral practices do not work that way. Even if a wrongdoer is blameworthy, a person may be disabled to blame the wrongdoer. That is because of the would-be blamer's position, prior misconduct, or character. This paper is concerned with the question of whether, to what extent, and under what conditions a manager may lose (or retain) her standing to blame her subordinates. In the course of this paper, I shall examine four possible ways to undermine one's moral standing to blame. And I shall defend the claim that the moral standing to blame in corporate roles is continuous with individual moral standing.
