Hi Tima
Over the last few years, I've asked students to fill in this very simple survey based on the New Environmental Paradigm (NEP). They enter a "1" in the column that reflects their agreement.
Then on the second worksheet, their scores are calculated and compared to a sample of US students based on a journal article on the NEP. In addition, the spreadsheet measures pro-environmental intention and pro-environmental behavior.
I ask the students to fill it in for themselves, and then have an older generation person or family member fill it in. They save both scores.
We discuss in class:
- Differences between individual students (within their groups)
- Differences between generations
- Differences between Singaporean university students and US students
We try to identify the reasons why these differences exist, and what drives people's egoistic, altruist and eco-centric values. Especially interesting is the discussion of why intention and behavior is usually lower in Singapore (because, for example, protests/activism are not allowed here), which gets us into a discussion about appropriate survey design and cultural context of surveys.
The three types of values are discussed on my blog that is associated with the class as background reading, specifically the material listed in Week 5, Section 5.2 via this webpage: https://blogs.ntu.edu.sg/ab0603/ (click on "menu" and then "weekly content" to get to Week 5 material)
Feel free to use this spreadsheet. Students need to 'reset' content to "zero" before filling in a second time, otherwise results will be miscalculated.
I haven't saved previous student results, unfortunately. It's just an in-class exercise for discussion of environmental values.
Best
Judith
Hello Simians,
Do you know of any surveys that students can complete to assess their economic/social/environmental values? I'd like them to self-assess their priorities.
I've often thought about doing such surveys on students to track differences in students groups (changes across time, differences across programs and schools). I'm finally taking a first step.
