    Dear Fellow SIMians,

With the fall semester fast approaching, I thought I would let you know of my recent interview with Denny Gioia. As many of you know, Denny was a recall coordinator at Ford back when they produced the Pinto, a car with an "exploding gas tank." This is a well-documented situation.

Fortune magazine pronounced Ford's Pinto decision to be one of the 20 that made business history. Denny wrote about his experience in the pages of the Journal of Business Ethics in 1992. Interviewing Denny, Malcolm Gladwell brought the issue back to our attention in a New Yorker magazine article this past May. And good news for us all, Denny wrote a case that he distributes freely to folks like us (attached).

Teaching this case for years, I decided to sit down with Denny and ask him the kinds of questions that are on my students' minds. I am writing to be sure that you have access to the interview (free of charge). My hope is that it just might bring this case to life for you and your students in an even more compelling fashion. Know that I have shown the video once. I can tell you that my students really appreciated hearing from Denny like this.

Use it or not, I hope you all have a great year!

    Jim

    Likewise!

After Reading the case I remembered the quote from Justice Potter Stewart:

THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE, BETWEEN WHAT YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO DO, AND WHAT IS RIGHT TO DO.

    All the Best.

As Jim points out this is a fascinating case.  Please note that Denny and Linda Trevino also did a DVD version of the case with instructors' guide which is available through Penn State Media Sales:

    This is AWESOME, Jim!

Thanks so much for sharing the updated information and the interview with Denny. I use the Pinto case regularly in my graduate HRM course with great effect. The students really engage with it. This is a compelling story and links so well to current ethical issues which continue in the auto industry.
