At this year's Academy (Saturday 8/5, 11:45-1:45), the Alternative Economic Futures community hosts a special session with two of the most insightful progressive thinkers of the past generation: David Korten (author of When corporations rule the world and co-founder of Yes! magazine) and Joel Rogers (professor of sociology, law, and public policy and contributing editor for The Nation).

An economy organized by and for global corporations is driving environmental collapse, wealth concentration, and governance failure. Moreover, recent electoral outcomes around the world have shown the bankruptcy of conventional wisdom about the inevitability of neoliberal globalization. What would it take to create an economy organized by and for the people of self-reliant, self-governing, place-based communities? And how can management scholars help inspire and enable this alternative? David Korten will share his work on a global system of bioregional economies and Joel Rogers will describe the political and technological underpinnings of this alternative future.

David's recent work envisions steps away from a "global suicide economy" and toward a "living Earth economy." Joel argues that both neoliberalism and traditional social democracy are dead ends and instead favors locally-based "productive democracy." The session will include both brief talks by David and Joel and engaged dialogue with all participants to help envision what comes next, combining the wisdom of the speakers and the insights of the other participants into a path forward.

Please plan to attend and have your voice heard!

Saturday August 5, 11:45-1:45, Atlanta Marriott Marquis, Atrium A602

     Paul Adler and Jerry Davis
