    Jim,

On behalf of so many of us who were recipients of Bill Frederick's selfless gifts, thank you for sharing the video of the memorial gathering with us. Bill was always kind to me, including just last year when he and Millie were gracious and giving in coming to my book launch celebration in Pittsburgh. As one who had to follow Bill at Pitt, it was an impossible task. However, Bill's legacy always provided a wonderful example to aspire to. You and David did a terrific job of sharing Bill's gifts to you and all of us. Thank you.

    Brad

*This Necessary Conversation is sponsored by the **Donahue Center for
Business Ethics & Social Responsibility in the Manning School of Business
    at UMass-Lowell.*
*Topic for this Conversation: **Making the World Better though Our
    Teaching and Research*
Jim Walsh joins Sandra Waddock for a Necessary Conversation about 'Making
the World Better though our Teaching and Research." Jim, one of 28
academics profiled in Waddock's book Intellectual Shamans (2014), embraces
leaving the world a better place as part of his core mission. He believes
that as academics, we are all called to do so. Walsh, a former President of
the Academy of Management and the Gerald and Esther Care Professor of
Business of Administration and Professor of Strategy (and Management and
Organizations) at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan,
believes that what we choose to teach and how we teach it, as well as the
research that we do, are fundamental aspects of how we, as academics, can
do work that 'leaves the world a better place.' Walsh's research explores
purpose, accountability, and control of the firm, and his teaching
emphasizes helping students learn to lead. Please join us to explore how
academics can successfully negotiate today's academic environment and still
    do meaningful research and teaching.

    *Speaker Bio*
*Jim Walsh *writes, "Research, teaching and service define my professional
life. Two qualities define much of my work. I’m fascinated by cross-level
relationships: the influences between and among individuals, organizations,
and society really engage me. And as romantic as it may sound, I think we
are all called to try to leave the world a better place. The desire to
better understand these cross-level relationships, done with a clear eye on
enhancing our well-being, animates nearly everything I do." --

Giving Voice to Values Book Series with Greenleaf Publishing

The Giving Voice to Values initiative has teamed up with Greenleaf Publishing<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001O1VAqxvTyok3KORKcsOiWgNClb4n1achllJ5R3N1u4x90vVtfS_guiedVWHxeXEAalKM28gxI9il-QrPo0JIXMTTA3uKsMfQFVuiVt-rhD-W1DBvFXW5tSORDwKAiFj5rdsxW7PpvzOR1JnI-rc4Ti1IEwOfkiqG986A_DihHUI=&c=_9a-Fr5OrAgsM5Y2ASs8SOpoVS6U_UG-lsq5TvDf0vKvA1a6_Vk3bg==&ch=3Qoml5QuGbfxjMp915FbFF5IT_coki0lCsLIume9qrHoltEXsN5yuw==> (an imprint of Routledge) to produce a collection of books on business ethics and corporate social responsibility (CSR) that will bring a practical, solutions-oriented, skill-building approach to the salient questions of values-driven leadership.

Giving Voice to Values<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001O1VAqxvTyok3KORKcsOiWgNClb4n1achllJ5R3N1u4x90vVtfS_guqZ2AfNuH-Qq1-WMRob1eHbqNmLMoBuR7THe2KQAC3kLPYFIUjWlpDLOZQDjP14oKQXZhrd5cfyk_Nk1sbORs0q7YEx72yKJpfQgQtAAk33AFrvvDtGjtrtIIpg1aH7c_EoGLgM7WQHJzm2aS7Ocig5ievggNFONVQ==&c=_9a-Fr5OrAgsM5Y2ASs8SOpoVS6U_UG-lsq5TvDf0vKvA1a6_Vk3bg==&ch=3Qoml5QuGbfxjMp915FbFF5IT_coki0lCsLIume9qrHoltEXsN5yuw==> – the curriculum, the pedagogy and the research upon which it is based – was designed to transform the foundational assumptions that underlie the teaching of business ethics and equip future business leaders not only to know what is right — but how to make it happen.

To this end, proposals are invited for concise (average 50,000 words, but shorter will be considered) business education and professional development books geared to the undergraduate, MBA and executive education markets, as well as practitioners. Books may be focused upon a functional area (e.g., accounting ethics); an industry (e.g., ethics in the financial sector); a regional area (e.g., practical ethics in India); or some combination of the above.

Although it is fully expected that some manuscripts may well include a focus upon the theory and analysis of ethical questions, or the history and benchmarks of corporate social responsibility (CSR) as it has evolved, the intention of this collection is to emphasize research and/or experience-based practical examples and guidance on how to positively enact values-driven leadership positions, rather than to focus solely or primarily upon ethical debate. In this way, these books will be useful not only in traditional business ethics and CSR courses, but also in other core management disciplines and applied executive programs.

Greenleaf Publishing, a leading publisher in the areas of responsible management, ethics and social responsibility, has recently joined Routledge, enabling the further development and strengthening of the list and improved international impact. Greenleaf Publishing and Routledge publish many important titles in the areas of corporate governance and social responsibility.

Interested authors are invited to discuss their ideas with Mary C. Dear SIMians - I am sorry that so many of you could not join us at Bill Frederick's memorial gathering last month in Pittsburgh but below is the link to the video of this event.
