Academy of Management PDW - Being a Department Chair: Learning from Others
Professor Margarethe Wiersema (University of California, Irvine), Dean Chuck Williams (Butler College of Business), and Professor Charles R. (Bob) Greer (Texas Christian University) will co-chair a PDW session on Being a Department Chair: Learning from Others. This professional development workshop is designed for those who currently serve as department chairs or are incoming chairs. The purpose of the professional development workshop is to discuss key issues that confront department chairs and to share experiences with other chairs. The PDW will run from 1:00 – 4:30 pm on Friday, August 3, 2012. It will begin with a plenary session, followed by breakout sessions, which allow for opportunity to socialize with other department chairs. The plenary includes five department chairs from various institutions who will highlight the key challenges and issues that department chairs face today. These chairs include the following: Steve Barr (North Carolina State University), Greg Dess (University of Texas Dallas), Irene M. Duhaime (Georgia State University), Jim Jawahar (Illinois State University), and Annette Ranft (University of Tennessee). The breakout sessions will focus on the following topics: Evaluating and Mentoring Faculty on Research and Teaching; Low Performing Faculty; Clinical and Academic Faculty Recruiting; Course Development, Scheduling, and Staffing; Managing Relations across the Business School; and Managing Time and Conflict.
