Last November, I announced my plans to step down this summer from my role as Executive Director of the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics (MCAE) at Santa Clara University.  It has been a great privilege to lead this critical institution for the last seventeen years.  It was launched 31 years ago by its first executive director Prof. Manuel Velasquez.

During the last seventeen years, the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics has grown into the largest and most active university-based ethics center in the world. The Center enjoys an excellent international reputation and robust financial health.  It has 25 staff, 70 affiliated faculty, and about 30 student fellows and interns.   The Center is active in many diverse fields of applied ethics, and deeply involved in emerging ethics issues arising in Silicon Valley.  The Executive Director speaks frequently to media about such issues.

The search committee has indicated it will consider either an academic or a practitioner, but the individual must have a deep understanding and experience in some field of applied ethics.  Besides a position description, the search committee has written a "Leadership Profile," a document prepared for dean-level searches at Santa Clara. This is available at  MCAE Leadership Profile.  The individual selected will hold both the administrative title and be appointed to the faculty.
