    IABS Statement: Ann Buchholtz

    Today we mourn the passing of one of our dearest colleagues – Ann Buccholtz. Ann, to many of us, played multiple roles – a friend, colleague, co-author, reviewer, Editorial Board member, mentor, and fellow committee member. The many ways in which we individually – and collectively – know Ann is a testament to her generous nature.

    Ann was generous with her time, and generous in spirit. Many of us will have first encountered Ann as the co-author of a business & society text we read as students, most of us will have gone on to know Ann through her scholarly contributions to JBE, BEQ, AMR, AMJ, JMS and others, almost all of us will have come to know Ann as a warm friend and mentor who always had time for a chat. I first met Ann at an IABS conference many years ago – Ann recognised me as a new member of the association and welcomed me to the organisation, introduced me to others, and took me under her wing. At the SIM Board Meeting in Vancouver, where Ann was presented with the Sumner Marcus Award, friends and colleagues rose in a spontaneous standing ovation to acknowledge a pillar of our community.

    One aspect of Ann's life and work that resonates strongly with me, as I reflect on how I know her, is that Ann didn't strive for work-life balance – she integrated it. Her scholarly work was committed to decency in management, how companies can be good, and how organisations can make a meaningful contribution to the communities in which they operate. She is a scholar who lived by these values – she was a standout contributor to the community in which she worked, and she was the very embodiment of decency.

    Our thoughts go out to Ann's brother and family. We will work with SIM to honour Ann's legacy.

    Ann, we honour you and everything you stood for and worked towards. We will miss you. Rest in peace.

    To laugh often and love much;
    to win the respect of intelligent persons
    and the affection of children;
    to earn the approbation of honest critics
    and to endure the betrayal of false friends;
    to appreciate beauty;
    to find the best in others;
    to give of one's self;
    to leave the world a little better,
    whether by a healthy child,
    a garden patch
    or a redeemed social condition;
    to have played and laughed with enthusiasm
    and sung with exultation;
    to know that even one life has breathed easier
    because you have lived,
    this is to have succeeded.

    Colin, Harry, and all,

    Thank you for your wonderful tributes to Ann.

    Over the years I have interacted with Ann only occasionally: a committee hear, a session there, sharing an occasional conversation at a banquet table or a business meeting.  But despite those limited interactions she always treated me like a dear friend.  I saw her only briefly at the Vancouver Academy meetings as I was leaving a room and passed by a table where she was talking with someone.  But in that brief moment her reaction was typically Ann: her eyes lit up and she smiled broadly at me, wordlessly saying "it's wonderful to see you again!"

    Sometimes in our busy lives it is easy to forget that no matter how important the meeting, the task or the idea, we are most importantly individuals who are here on Earth to bless one another.  Ann never seemed to forget that.

    I too will miss her.

    I am very saddened by this unexpected news. I did not know Ann well but the highlight of my Academy of Management meetings was running into Ann and getting a warm hug from her.

    The world is a little less bright today.

    I am honoring her memory by donating to the MS Society.

    On behalf of Ann, I want to thank you for your kind words. We have received so many tributes to her in the past two weeks, that it is astounding. We, as a family, are very proud of what Ann accomplished in her life, not only academically, but,also, in the fact that she had such profound meaning to others.  Thank you for your contribution to the MS Society and for keeping her legacy alive.  Dick and Carol Buchholtz (brother and sister-in-law)

    To laugh often and love much;
    to win the respect of intelligent persons
    and the affection of children;
    to earn the approbation of honest critics
    and to endure the betrayal of false friends;
    to appreciate beauty;
    to find the best in others;
    to give of one's self;
    to leave the world a little better,
    whether by a healthy child,
    a garden patch
    or a redeemed social condition;
    to have played and laughed with enthusiasm
    and sung with exultation;
    to know that even one life has breathed easier
    because you have lived,
    this is to have succeeded.

    Hi All

    I want to echo the words said by many of you, and like Gordon, I felt the exact same way each time I saw Ann.  Ann had a way of making everyone she encountered feel like they were special, and like an important person in her life.

    She will truly be missed.

    Gordon
