JOURNAL OF BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT
SPECIAL ISSUE
Autism in the Workplace
CALL FOR PAPERS
The Journal of Business and Management is pleased to announce a call for papers for a Special Issue on Autism in the Workplace. The special issue will focus on autism in the workplace from both an individual and an organizational perspective. The aim of this Special Issue is to encourage theoretical and empirical research on the employment of individuals with autism. With approximately 200,000 people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) expected to reach young adulthood in the next five years, it is imperative to research the issues associated with their transition into the world of work. Recently several high profile companies have announced efforts to actively recruit and hire individuals with autism as part of their diversity and inclusion policies, drawing attention to this emerging segment of the labor force.
It is estimated that there are 3.5 million Americans living with autism. Approximately 70% of these individuals will be unable to live independently and the cost to society of supporting each individual may exceed 3 million dollars across their lifetime. Autism Speaks estimates the unemployment rate for individuals with autism to be as high as 85%. While there are organizations that focus on the school to work transition of young adults with ASD, little is known about their job search and career experiences.
The Journal of Business and Management encourages research in all aspects of autism in the workplace. Topics may include the school to work transition of young adults on the autism spectrum, process issues in recruitment, job search and job choice, the career experiences of individuals with autism, and the Human Resource and organizational policy issues surrounding the employment of individuals with autism.
