    Dear Colleagues,

    We would like to extend a hearty welcome and open invitation to participate in the 2014 Professional Development Workshop (PDW) sponsored by the ONE/SIM/MED Divisions entitled; Sustainability in Management Education: Multidisciplinary, Innovative and Integrated Approaches. This PDW has evolved over the last five years and continues to draw many seasoned and new participants, which is a true reflection of a strong, collaborative ONE/SIM/MED community. As has become our tradition, we offer a different focus each year while: a) maintaining the theme of sustainability in management education, b) choosing relevant sustainability topics, and c) seeking to produce tangible outputs from our meetings.

    This year, we will uncover the motivations behind business schools seeking to deliver sustainability in Management Education programs. Based on the vibrant discussion from last year’s PDW, three Research Clusters were formed around specific topics to be addressed;

    • Cluster 1 will examine the goals, core philosophies and missions of business programs designed with a holistic sustainability approach.
    • Cluster 2 will examine engaging pedagogical approaches in Management Education programs, including content and tools students and faculty utilize. Specifically, learning tools such as games, simulations, internships and projects that students and faculty rated highly for learning opportunities will be evaluated.
    • Cluster 3 will examine the role of organizations that embrace the business case for sustainability in Management Education, and the types of change accelerators involved. Given the parallels that exist between past United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) workshops and our own efforts, Cluster 3 will also investigate how business schools are developing the multidisciplinary case for sustainability and which organizations are facilitating these tools.
    • Cluster 4 will investigate the ‘how’ behind holistic and practice-grounded Management Education and what business schools are doing to make sustainability exciting and relevant for their communities. We will make an attempt to uncover what differentiates programs focused on leadership and change agents vs. the traditional management education curricula.

    The purpose of this proposed PDW is twofold; we seek to address the inquiries and concerns of our active and dedicated ONE/SIM/MED community, learning about the characteristics of leadership and change agents that contribute to 21st century sustainability driven business programs.
