    Hello Archie and Sim-ians.

I am responding to Archie's question about Neil's recent post to the list, which included an announcement from Springer.

I happen to manage the listserv for SBE and Neil had asked me before subscribing to the SBE list.  He indicated that he was interested in subscribing both to maintain currency on subjects of interest in business ethics as well as to post announcements periodically from Springer.  He asked whether that would be an appropriate use of the list.

I explained that those of us who had been involved in establishing the SBE list had not actually addressed this issue so, until the group did so more formally, it seemed that any post that provided information of value to the membership seemed acceptable.   Posting tables to contents to journals is a regular practice and people do that all the time.  People also send out notifications of new publications – and not always their own.  There has yet to be a complaint about Neil's postings on SBE, but that is not to say that people think it is appropriate – I am simply reporting in a descriptive mode, for what it is worth.

I do believe that we are all busy people and that there is a value to announcements – whether by our colleague or by those who are responsible for the publications themselves.  No, I am not suggesting that our listservs become billboard-strewn highways where we can no longer find room for substantive conversation.  But, perhaps we might suggest a few parameters and then accept the value that announcements serve in providing information so that we do not have to find our way to the corner library to see what has been published each month?

Alternatively, since I am not familiar with SIM's "listserv rules," perhaps you all do have rules of engagement and there are clear lines for this post.

Here's to a healthy conversation around the subject.

    Laura and SIMians/SBEers/BETSers,

My own thought on this is that commercial publishers with products to sell should not have access to our listservs. Most of them already have our email addresses anyway and we already get emails from them directly.

I see no problem with academic journals posting Tables of Contents telling us what new research is available for our reading. I see no problem with individual members of SIM, SBE, or BETS announcing their own publications (books, articles, reports) for our awareness. These legitimately seem to be in the spirit of academic discourse.

But, once we open the listserv to one commercial publisher we have to open it to all of them and we will be overwhelmed by advertising. Then, other commercial enterprises selling software, consulting services, etc. will want access too.  In my mind this can drown out legitimate academic/professional announcements/discourse. Therefore, I believe SIM, SBE and BETS should restrict our listservs so this type commercial advertising cannot appear on them.
