    Colleagues,

As you are making your plans for attending the upcoming Academy of Management (AOM) meeting, my co-organizers and I wanted to share with you the information about our PDW scheduled for Friday afternoon on the use of large-scale archival datasets for research.  The schedule, presenter names and affiliations, and abstract information follow this note.  We are looking forward to good conversation from our presenters who each have expertise in working with large-scale archival datasets.  There will also be time for audience questions and conversation about your experiences.  The PDW is co-sponsored by the SHRM Foundation and SHRM.

    Regards,

    Mary Gowan

    Abstract

Human resource researchers often have difficulty acquiring the desired sample for a research study and/or obtaining a sample large enough to answer the research questions of interest.  This professional development session is designed to address four goals:  (1) to energize academics to consider using large archival datasets that enable longitudinal research, testing causal models, and greater generalizability of results; (2) to provide participants with a realistic preview about the opportunities and challenges of using these datasets; (3) to educate participants about the importance of ensuring that research using large datasets is theory-driven; and (4) to stimulate ideas about possible partnerships with practitioners who have access to large datasets. The panel members include a journal editor, managers of the NLS and SHRM datasets, and faculty who have used large-scale archival data in their research.  Participants should come prepared to discuss their ideas, experiences, questions, and concerns with the panelists in an extensive Q&A session.
