The ICCSR and Nottingham University Business School are delighted to be hosting a public lecture with Sir Mark Moody-Stuart on Responsible Leadership: Lessons from the Front Line of Sustainability and Ethics

Sir Mark Moody-Stuart is as qualified as anyone on the planet to discuss the realities, dilemmas and lessons to be learnt from the last 20 years of corporate engagement with sustainability, ethics and responsibility. In his unique book –part memoir, part confessional, part manifesto for leadership – we hear of dealings with dictators and prime ministers, colleagues and NGOs, rivals and friends. We travel from Syria to Nigeria; Iraq to Downing Street; and from the machinations of the United Nations to those inside the boardroom of Shell. We see Shell's annus horribilis in 1995 unfold through the eyes of an insider, and how Brent Spar and the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa sent shockwaves through the company, resulting in a complete reappraisal of its mission and principles. We hear lessons from a life spent living in ten different countries and we come to realise that, for corporations, trying to do the right thing can sometimes be almost impossible. We also come to know a deeply ethical and thoughtful leader who has always tried to do exactly that.

Sir Mark served as a Managing Director of Royal Dutch/Shell Group from 1991-2001 and as Chairman from 1998-2001.  He was Chairman of Anglo American plc from 2002-2009.  He has been lead Director of Accenture Plc since November 2002 and a Director of Saudi Aramco since 2007, and on the board of HSBC from 2001-2010.  Sir Mark serves as Chairman of Hermes EOS, Vice Chairman of the UN Global Compact, and Chairman of the Global Compact Foundation and the Innovative Vector Control Consortium.  He was appointed a Knight Commander of St Michael and St George in 2000.  He is married to Judy and they have four children. He lives in London.

You are invited to join us to hear Sir Mark recount his experiences first hand.  The lecture will followed by a reception and book signing.  Copies of his book Responsible Leadership: Lessons from the front Line of Sustainability and Ethics will be available to purchase at the event or can be ordered when you register.

The lecture will take place on Friday 2nd May in LT1, The Exchange building, Jubilee Campus from 6.00pm until 7.30pm and will be followed by a drinks reception and book signing.  This lecture is free to attend and open to the public but registration is essential to secure your place.
