EABIS is pleased to invite you to participate in this research workshop organised by the Institute of Governance and Public Management of Warwick Business School. The event will serve as an important preliminary platform for the 6th EABIS Annual Colloquium (September 20-21, ESADE Business School, Barcelona), which will take as its theme Global Governance and the Role of Business in Society.

    Why Should I Attend?

The workshop presents academics and engaged stakeholders with three outstanding opportunities around Global (Economic) Governance:

    • To help shape and enhance a more specialised knowledge and learning agenda
    • To contribute to the knowledge development and learning recommendations that will be streamed back to the European Commission to inform the FP7 Framework Programme
    • To engage with faculty members from the Social Sciences and Humanities for an interdisciplinary exchange of ideas, knowledge and perspectives

    The Focus of the Day

Existing approaches to the role of firms within society and polity are insufficient to deal with the reality of the role of large corporations in national, let alone global, economies. This is equally true for ideas based on assumptions of perfect markets and those that envisage sovereign national governments regulating economies and delivering public services. Large Multi-National Corporations (MNCs) can be sources of governance as much as they are objects of it.

The key question that emerges is therefore what theories, knowledge and tools do we need in order to analyse more realistically, and propose policy for, the place of firms in global governance?

Academic research on the role of business in society requires an integrated approach given its complex and multi-faceted nature. CSR research is to be seen as a fundamental part of scholarly disciplines (including political science, economics, sociology, geography, etc). This workshop seeks to enhance these linkages on the theme of Global Governance and promote interdisciplinary reflection and engagement.

    Discussion Questions

Gathering a selected group of academics and stakeholders from business, government and civil society with an acknowledged expertise, the workshop will allow in depth discussion on the following key questions:

    • How can governments share their responsibility for public space?
    • How can corporations accept democratic accountability - especially at global level where there is no demos?
    • Is there a public sphere beyond the state, and if so who populates it? What is the equivalent to those questions at global level? How does government gain access to global public space?
    • Are MNCs the only global citizens?

    Who Should Attend?

    • Academic faculty members from business disciplines, Social Sciences & Humanities actively engaged in exploring Global (Economic) Governance issues with a focus on Europe's (enterprise) role in this context.
    • Representatives from business and policy-making who have significant experience in corporate responsibility and understanding of the evolving role of firms in the governance of the global economy.
    • Representatives from institutions and NGOs who have experience of and insights into the topic.

How Do I Register / Present?

The workshop will have a limited number of participants to allow for effective dialogue and strong interaction between the participants. Priority for attendance will be given to those who have related work or ideas to contribute to the dialogue.

If your current work addresses the above issues and questions and believe you could enhance the content of the workshop, please pre-register by completing the Participation Request Form (on e vent website or download here) no later than Monday 24 April 2007. You will be informed of your selection by Friday 27 April.

As it forms part of the "CSR Platform" Project, led by the European Academy of Business in Society (EABIS) and funded by the European Union's 6th Framework Programme, participation is free of charge. Please note that travel and accommodation costs for participants will not be covered.
