EABIS is pleased to invite you to participate in a research workshop designed and convened by the INSEAD Business in Society Centre. The event will build upon previous EABIS activities such as the 5th Annual Colloquium in Milan, which examined "Strategic Management, Corporate Sustainability and the Stakeholder View of the Firm."   This theme will also be the subject of a special issue of the Corporate Governance Journal due in autumn 2007, with high-level collaborative articles developed from material presented in Milan.

    The Focus of the Day

The objective of the workshop is to convene a small, carefully selected group of academics and reflective practitioners from business and other stakeholder groups to share their work and thinking on the link between corporate responsibility and corporate strategy. It is intended to provide new insights into the dynamic relationship between the two, to highlight key challenges from the academic and practitioner perspectives, and to examine the state of theory and methodology that currently inform management practice and education.

    Discussion Questions

Through a combination of inputs from leading thinkers and practitioners working on the intersection between corporate strategy and corporate responsibility, the agenda will address some key questions, including:

    • How does social responsibility theory and practice inform (if at all) the content and process of corporate strategy, as we know it today?
    • How could/should the debate on the role of business in society inform the development of a strategic management theory based on the explicit consideration and integration of the social responsibilities of companies?
    • Does the adaptation of strategic management theory require a marginal adjustment to the current thinking and practice, or a more radical re- design of our models and processes?

The agenda will leave open space for plenary as well as small group interactions, since the assumption is that the link between the development of corporate strategy and the role of business in society is at present far from being fully articulated and that it will only emerge through effective dialogue among experienced scholars and reflective practitioners.

    Who Should Attend?

    • Business school faculty members and researchers who are already exploring the correlation between corporate responsibility and strategic management theory & practice
    • Business executives who have significant experience and interest in embedding corporate responsibility at the heart of their company's strategy
    • Representatives from institutions and NGOs who have experience of and insights into the topic.
