  • 1.  Advice on "sustainability management"

    Posted 02-17-2010 22:33

    Colleagues,

The Management Department here at the College of St. Benedict and St. John's University is considering creating a "Sustainability Management" track within the Department (perhaps as a stand-alone major, perhaps as a "Concentration," perhaps as a minor).   We know of several graduate programs in this area, but we are less familiar with undergrad programs.

We are undergraduate liberal arts colleges, but have strong programs in Management, Accounting/Finance, and Economics, as well as a very strong Environmental Studies program and a strong institutional commitment to sustainability issues more generally.   Our thinking is to create a program within Management that can take advantage of these other institutional strengths.

I wonder if anyone can point me in the direction of programs, curricula, or schools that are doing something along these lines.   Where might we look for models of such a program?

I'd also welcome any general advice and suggestions -  good idea? Bad idea? Fad? Cutting edge?

I would welcome any responses – if you'd prefer not to clutter this discussion list, please feel free to respond to me directly – (and I'd be happy collate responses and share them with anyone who is interested).

    Thanks.

    Cheers,

    Hi Joe,

At ASU we have the Global Institute of Sustainability (see link below).  They can probably provide a lot of curricular ideas.

    http://schoolofsustainability.asu.edu/

Also, in the W. P. Carey School of Business, in addition to the B.S. degrees in traditional areas (Management, Finance, etc.), we also offer a set of B.A. degrees that combine a business core with an additional area outside the School, including one in Sustainability in cooperation with the Institute. Below, I am including the link to that program and the front page description.

    http://wpcarey.asu.edu/undergraduate/business-degrees/sustainability.cfm

    Program Description

Finding ways to grow and prosper while reducing the stress on the global environment is a critical issue facing today's society. As a result, sustainability is one of the fastest-growing functional areas in which business acumen will be highly useful and widely applied. Combining the latest trends in business with cutting-edge knowledge of sustainability will prepare you to excel in a career area that is expected to dramatically increase in demand.

Among the courses in this concentration are Environment and Society, Sustainable Energy and Material Use, and International Development and Sustainability. The concentration courses are offered through ASU's School of Sustainability.

    Career Opportunities

Businesses all over the world are asking serious questions about how they can understand, evaluate and act on issues related to sustainability while making sensible business decisions for both the short and long term. They seek qualified individuals who understand the societal, scientific and business aspects of sustainability.

    More Information

Perhaps this will get you started.  If you would like me to contact anyone or send along some syllabi, please just let me know.

    I hope that helps,

    Barbara W. Keats
