Call for Contributions: Asia Pacific Academy for Business In Society (APABIS)
Annual Conference, Tokyo, 4-5 November 2010
Sustainable Decision-Making in a Time of Crisis: Public and Private Perspectives
Papers are invited for the 2010 APABIS Annual Conference, organized by the United Nations University's Institute for Sustainability and Peace (UNU-ISP) and the Asia Pacific Academy of Business in Society (APABIS). The conference will be held on 4 – 5 November 2010, at the United Nations University headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.
The title of the conference reflects lessons learnt and being learned from the global financial crisis, from the climate change prognosis and from rethinking global governance. 2010 is also the 10th anniversary of the UN Global Compact, the UN Year of Biodiversity, and the conference will be held immediately prior to the Asia Pacific Economic Community (APEC) 2010 Summit (10 – 11 November in Yokohama, Japan). Given the birth of the G20 group of nations, the inexorable diffusion of economic power to the Asia Pacific region, and the rise of new organisational forms and business models, the conference is particularly timely and relevant. The title of the conference reflects the conference partners' areas of expertise and asks: 'how and to what extent does decision making differ between the public and private arenas?' Further, 'given the imperative for new global governance how can private and public decision-making work together for the common good?'
The conference will encourage open dialogue and learning between business, academics, experts on business planning and public sector policy, civil society and the media. It will consider external and internal factors involved in decision-making, exploring the balance between long and short term goals and pressing needs in times of crisis. Topics of particular focus will include the immediacy of climate change, sustainability, emerging low carbon sustainable enterprise economy agenda, and peacebuilding as a sustainability approach to peace.
Submission Guidelines
Contributions are invited from business, government, civil society and academia, in any form – as case studies, or more general theoretical/conceptual pieces. Proposals for focused panel sessions on relevant topics are also invited. Please send a 1-page paper abstract or panel proposal (please clearly indicate the nature of your application) to apabis2010@unu.edu, by 1 May 2010
Details of conference registration fees will be posted on the APABIS website (www.apabis.org ) and circulated to applicants as soon as possible. All applications will be acknowledged. Please indicate if you would like your paper to be considered for inclusion in a special edition of the Sustainability Accounting, Management and Policy Journal and/or a book on public and private decision-making to be published by the United Nations University (UNU).
