Greetings! With regard to Kathy's question, I had an experience whichh suggests some problems to avoid. Some years ago, I applied for a rather large grant to write a book about an important and controversial GE executive. The project was to be funded by another GE executive and administered by a university institute. I wasn't aware that there was a highly interested individual behind the scenes.
I did not receive the grant, but I later got a call from the sponsor. He was disappointed that the book was likely to be critical of the subject. He offered to reroute the money to me. I told him that it would be inappropriate to undo the award.
The sponsor had hoped for hagiography. The university institute failed to negotiate effective ground rules. I don't think the book was ever written. I am sure that the GE executive would have been happier with the direct hire of an accommodating author.
Needless to say, large sums seldom come without strings.
