  • 1.  definition of sustainability?

    Posted 07-16-2009 05:09
    Hello! Friends,

Can anyone give a good definition of sustainability? I see the word used widely and positively, but I am curioius at least about:
    1. the motives of seeking sustainability: do we really care about the environment? perhaps to do so for  the purpose of our self-interest?
    2. the impact of technology-seeking. when a new technology comes in, it would bring to end some businesses. Is it sustainable approach to life? Does the approach of technology after technology in businesses promise sustainablity for businesses themselves and for the environment?

Thank you in advance for your explanations,

These are two very good questions and I do fear that sustainability will be sued or isusede so broadly that it will be another buzzword that becomes meaningless. In my mind sustainability cannot help but be self interest in part, because we are talking systems and it is in my self-interest to preserve nature and the environment. On the other hand, to quote TS Elliot, "to do the right thing for the wrong reason is the ultimate treason." A cost of technology will always be to destroy some existing business, Schumpeter was correct. for the most part buggy whip manufacturers are gone. However, we in as never learned to distribute the benefits of technology in a manner that compensates those who are displaced. As Benedict XVI notes in his encyclical Caritas in Veritates, it is time to reexamine our intellectual property laws.

    Dear Sheng Zhao,

ASU is home to the Global Institute of Sustainability.  The link below should take you to the page on their web site that has several different "takes" on defining sustainability.  I hope that helps.

The technology issue in your question is not that well addressed by
sustainable development ideas. You may find a slightly different route
    through ecological modernization.

Arthur Mol is one of the authors of the concept:
    Mol, A. P. J. 2001. Globalization and environmental reform : the ecological
modernization of the global economy. Cambridge: MIT Press.
