Professional Development Workshop
<st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Anaheim</st1:city>, <st1:state w:st="on">California</st1:state></st1:place>
This PDW will provide an interactive forum for PhD students and new scholars from different divisions interested in poverty alleviation and social repair to refine their research, develop new networks, and receive guidance on career paths from established scholars in the area. The innovative research themes encompassed by this PDW include pro-poor for-profit ventures, bottom of the pyramid strategies, market-based approaches, microfinance and social entrepreneurship in low-income international markets. The PDW will consist of 15-20 senior scholars and 15-20 PhD students from universities worldwide.
The workshop will open with participant introductions that will be followed by thematic small-group round table discussions where PhDs will be grouped with senior academics according to common research interests. Discussion questions will include: gaps in current knowledge, theory building, empirical research, developing a dissertation, getting hired and making tenure. Discussion highlights will be reported back to plenary and the PDW will conclude with a panel of four senior academics offering guidance on the career challenges new scholars face in this area on such topics as publishing in top journals, establishing mentors and framing research for the job market.
This PDW will provide many takeaways for participants including knowledge of understudied research areas, a list of participant bios and contact details, and answers to research and career-related questions of concern to participants. The PDW will also be the first step in the creation of an ongoing network of PhD students interested in this area for resource sharing, collaboration and mutual support. In addition, the evening before the PDW there will be a social event.
If you are interested in attending, please contact the organizers Kevin McKague mckague@yorku.ca or Moriah Meyskens Moriah.meyskens@fiu.edu to submit a brief bio with research interests or for more information.
