  • 1.  Moral responsibility and control cites?

    Posted 10-16-2008 19:46

    Hello,

I am seeking your assistance. I am looking for a few key citations related to the level of moral responsibility being dependent on the amount of control a person has over the situation (locus of control/attribution). Additionally, I would be interested in finding any articles or books that investigate the extent to which an external person judges the ethicality of a decision maker's actions based on the _perceived_ amount of control that the decision maker has over a situation and whether the decision maker seeks to influence the perceptions of the external person.

Please email me directly at ronroman@ethicalbusiness.org. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    Ron

    Ron,

I've studied locus of control in relation to ethical decision making.

See my 1986 AMR and 1990 Trevino & Youngblood, Bad Apples in Bad Barrels, Journal of Applied Psychology.

You may also want to look at my 1992 AMR on social implications of punishment where I cite research on responsibility attributions (some good cites for you there).

Search electronic databases on Schwartz and responsibility – should lead you to his work.

General attribution theory work should be helpful as well.

    Hope this helps!
