In response to Linda's question about resources that counter Friedman's claims about social responsibility, here are two essays that have proven interesting to my MBA students:
Amartya Sen, "Does Business Ethics Make Economic Sense?", Business Ethics Quarterly, 1993, Volume 3, Issue 1.
Sumantra Ghoshol, "Bad Management Theories are Destroying Good Management Practices," Academy of Management Learning and Education, 2005, Volume 4, Number 1.
Also, BusinessWeek in 2005 published two contrasting views on the subject – one an interview with Friedman, the other an interview with Bob Nardelli, then CEO of The Home Depot. Here are the links:
Friedman: http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/05_33/b3947115_mz017.htm
Nardelli: http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/05_33/b3947114_mz017.htm
I hope these resources are of some help.
