>>INVITATION AND CALL FOR PAPERS<<
Is Corporate Citizenship Making a Difference?
An International Symposium hosted by the United Nations Global Compact,
the UNISA Centre for Corporate Citizenship, and the Lindenberg Center for
Global Citizenship
Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration
Accra, Ghana
21-22 November 2006
We are happy to announce an international symposium for researchers to
discuss the question, Is Corporate Citizenship Making a Difference? We
feel that this question will become increasingly prominent, as both
protagonists and critics of corporate citizenship seek to understand,
monitor, and enhance the contribution of business to sustainable
development. It requires that we develop measures of success that are
commonly agreed upon, that respond to the challenges of a transition to
sustainability, and that relate to the broader impacts of business
activity and not just discrete best practice examples. Papers discussed
at the symposium will be considered for a special edition of the Journal
of Corporate Citizenship, to be published winter 2007.
The following questions characterised by scale of analysis may be relevant
to the symposium, among others:
1) Do corporate citizenship efforts make a difference at the local level,
where the overall impacts of business activity are often uncertain and
controversial, especially in areas of conflict?
2) Does corporate citizenship make a difference at the firm level,
considering the many unanswered questions on issues such as a companys
sphere of responsibility or influence?
3) Are multi-stakeholder initiatives and partnerships making a difference,
bearing in mind the high expectations of such efforts despite lingering
uncertainties regarding their impact?
4) Is the Global Compact (or other international corporate citizenship
initiatives) making a difference, and how can its various impacts be
measured?
5) Are corporate citizenship efforts making a difference to national or
international aspirations, particularly in Africa, where the Millennium
Development Goals seem most elusive?
We invite abstracts of 1000 words for papers pertinent to any of the above
themes, as well as other issues related to the impact of corporate
citizenship on sustainable development. Please submit your abstract by 21
May 2006 (or preferably earlier) to Ralph Hamann (
hamanr@unisa.ac.za) and
to Manuel Escudero (
escuderom@un.org). Authors will be notified regarding
acceptance and registration will open on 5 June. Final papers of about
5000 words will be due 21 October.
The symposium will take place at the Ghana Institute of Management and
Public Administration (GIMPA) (http://www.gimpa.edu.gh). The conference
fee of US$400 covers airport transfers, three nights accommodation and
meals, a half-day field trip, all conference materials, and a gala dinner
on the 22nd at the La Palm Beach Hotel together with participants of the
Global Compact International Learning Forum Meeting.
There are a number of symposium bursaries available for deserving
applicants. If you would like to apply for a bursary please include a
motivation letter with your abstract.
