The Organizational Behavior and Human Resources Divisions will be sponsoring a PDW on "Learning to Use Self-Leadership during the Dissertation Process" at the 2006 Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management in Atlanta. This PDW will take place on Sunday, August 13, from 8:00-9:50 am in the Singapore Room at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Self-leadership, based on social cognitive and intrinsic motivation theory, can help a person motivate him or herself to achieve personal goals. Self-leadership is likely to be of great assistance to doctoral students currently working on a dissertation. The principles of self-leadership can help doctoral students overcome the variety of obstacles that make finishing a dissertation such a difficult and trying process. Participants will be exposed to a variety of techniques that are applicable not only in managing the dissertation process, but also in other aspects of an academic career.

The PDW will comprise an interactive session that includes presentations from some of the panelists, overall group discussion, and small group discussions. The presentations will introduce participants to self-leadership, while the group discussions will be particularly useful in getting valuable advice on the specific issues participants are facing. In the small group discussions, students will be encouraged to share the hurdles they are facing and will hopefully leave the session armed with a variety of strategies to use that will assist them in completing their dissertations.

    Panelists/presenters for the PDW include:

Charles C. Manz (U. of Massachusetts at Amherst)
