    Social Entrepreneurship Intensive Doctoral Seminar

    June 10-15, 2018

A week-long intensive social entrepreneurship doctoral seminar will be offered by Professor Tom Lumpkin this summer in Dublin, Ireland during the week following the Babson Conference in Waterford.  Hosted by Dublin City University, the course will be offered June 10th-15th at the DCU Business School.

Students will apply and be admitted based on their qualifications and letters of interest. A maximum of ten students will be admitted (including 1-2 slots for faculty who may be interested). Students will be expected to read approximately 50 academic journal articles and prepare discussion questions and notes prior to the intensive seminar. During the months immediately following the seminar, students seeking course credit will be asked to write an article for submission to a journal and/or academic conference. As such, the course will meet the contact hours and scholarly requirements to qualify as a 3-hour doctoral level credit course.

Collaborations originating from relationships formed during past seminars have generated articles published in Academy of Management ReviewJournal of Business Venturing and International Small Business Journal, and numerous conference presentations.

Comments by previous students who have taken the course include:

"One of the main strengths of the class, for me, was the size. It was the perfect number of people to introduce a variety of perspectives, while allowing everyone to share their thoughts. The atmosphere you create by encouraging/directing the discussion really made it engaging" – Chad Coffman, University of Missouri, Kansas City, 2017 graduate

"It was a unique and wonderful academic experience for me... The selection of papers was quite special, giving students who want a real immersion into the SE subject an opportunity to learn fast about what is out there and the main discussions around SE" – Claudia Moura Romero, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, 2016 graduate

"This course was quite all-encompassing and a very good opportunity to develop a better overview of the literature." – Lien de Cuyper, Imperial College Business School, 2015 graduate

"It was extremely valuable for me... I enjoyed my time throughout the whole week" – Jooho Lee, University of Pennsylvania, 2014 graduate

"[The seminar] was one of those courses where everything just came together and made all my other courses make sense" – Kelsey Hood Cattaneo, The New School, 2013 graduate

"Would I recommend the course to a colleague? YES. It is so rare to find a place where SE research is approached well... I really enjoyed the structure and content of the 10 sessions" – Thierry Amslem, Sorbonne University, 2012 graduate

"The strength of the class was the intensity of discussion. It was structured around certain themes; however, the flexibility existed to allow discussions to deviate where necessary. I think you managed to create a good, supportive and open environment" – Dominic Chalmers, University of Strathclyde, 2011 graduate
