SOCIAL ISSUES IN MANAGEMENT (SIM)
PDW Call for Submissions
PDW Chair: Andy Wicks, The Darden School (UVA); WicksAAOM@darden.virginia.edu
The Social Issues in Management (SIM) Division seeks proposals for the Professional Development Workshop (PDW) sessions (Friday, August 10 and Saturday, August 11) at the 2018 Academy of Management (AOM) Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL. Scholarship in the SIM Division is characterized by our shared interest in understanding responsible managerial behavior at the individual, organizational, and trans-organizational levels.
PDWs should promote attendee's professional development – whether that be on teaching or research. PDWs differ from the Academy's scholarly program and are managed separately from the All Academy Theme Program and the Scholarly Program's paper sessions, symposia, and caucuses. As such, PDWs should not mimic, for example, presenter symposia in which a series of academic papers is presented with minimal audience involvement. Rather, PDWs should focus on widespread participation and skill development. PDWs aim to attract and involve a broad audience, including members of other Academy Divisions. PDWs should be interactive, inclusive, provocative, and creative.
PDW Proposals may choose to incorporate this year's conference theme: Improving Lives. In her discussion of the theme posted on the AOM conference website, 2018 Academy Program Chair Jacqueline A-M Coyle-Shapiro notes:
"The 2018 Theme asks the question: How can organizations contribute to the betterment of society through elevating the health and well-being of those who live in it? What role can organizations play in positively affecting the physical, psychological, social, and financial health of individuals, groups, communities, countries, regions, or global society?
Organizations are integral to, and have an interdependent relationship with, society. As such, they affect whether societies realize their members' health ("complete physical, mental and social well-being," WHO 1946) and overall wellbeing ("being happy, healthy and prosperous," Merriam-Webster). However, the role of organizations and the responsibility for improving lives is unclear, as is the extent to which their efforts have been successful.
The Theme will explore such issues as whether (and why) organizations have a responsibility for improving the lives of individuals in society. Do organizations have an obligation to "give back"? Are there benefits for organizations who seek to improve lives as a strategic opportunity? Could-and should-organizations play more of a role in the overall health and well-being of a society? What does it take to achieve a coordinated and sustained effort from organizations to address the grand challenges of improving a society's physical, psychological, social, and financial health? How can health and well-being become part of the conversation in upper echelons of organizations? What types of leadership approaches will engage people in making positive differences in their lives, on both large and small scales? If organizational purpose is to ensure that lives are better, what should organizations do differently?"
[Note: Please visit the AOM website for the full text of the Call from the Chair: http://aom.org/annualmeeting/theme/]
This year's theme clearly holds special relevance within the SIM domain and has huge implications for the work we do as a division. Submitters are encouraged to reflect on the conceptual and practical links their workshop offers to how we can improve lives. Connections to the theme are sought after in all three PDW tracks: research, pedagogy, and professional development.
While we encourage proposals related to the conference theme, we also welcome non-thematic proposals about other topics within the SIM domain including, but not limited to, ethical decision-making, corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, corporate philanthropy, business ethics, stakeholder engagement and relations, environmental management, base-of-the-pyramid, social entrepreneurship, moral development, public policy, and corporate political strategy. PDW workshops may have a variety of structural forms, including roundtable discussions, interactive panels, site visits, service-learning activities, creative/artistic sessions, entrepreneurial incubators, and other activities that help SIM members develop professionally.
In your PDW proposal, please include the following sections:
1) Research, Teaching, or Professional Development: Please indicate which PDW Track your submission fits into. Efforts will be made to include an array of workshops on scholarly research, pedagogy, and faculty development ideas.
2) Workshop Focus and Importance: What is the focus of this workshop and why is that important to SIM scholars/teachers? If relevant, please indicate how it relates to this year's Academy theme.
3) Structure and Audience Engagement: (a) How will the audience engage in interactive activity during this workshop? (b) How much time is needed and how will it be used?
4) Outcomes: What will be the valuable outcomes for participants? What useful outcomes can you envision from this workshop that could be shared with SIM members not in attendance? Indicate clearly the goals of the workshop.
5) Key Biographies: Provide short biographies (~125 words) for each organizer and key presenter.
The PDW submission system opens up November 28, 2017, and the deadline for PDW proposals is January 9, 2018, at 5:00 PM ET (NY Time).
Acceptances will be done on a rolling basis, however, so you are encouraged to submit early. Please contact Andy Wicks before December 15, 2017 if you would like to discuss proposal ideas or if you have other questions regarding PDW sessions. All submissions must be made online at http://aom.org/annualmeeting/submission/. Please also email a copy of your proposal to Andy Wicks at: WicksAAOM@darden.virginia.edu.
Best,
Andy

2018 SIM Division Program: Initial Call for Proposals
The SIM Division is a research community actively examining business ethics, stakeholder management, environmental management, social entrepreneurship, base-of-the-pyramid activities, corporate social responsibility, corporate philanthropy, workplace diversity, corporate governance, business-government relations, corporate political strategy, and corruption, among other topics. SIM Division members engage in theory building and theory testing to understand the antecedents, impacts, and institutional settings that shape managerial and organizational decision-making around such topics. SIM Division members seek to understand responsible behavior and contributions to the greater good at the individual, organizational, and trans-organizational levels. Further, we study international impacts with regard to whether, how, and under what conditions managerial, organizational, and trans-organizational responses to social concerns vary based on formal and informal institutional contexts, including laws, customs, traditions, and beliefs.
SIM seeks proposals for the main program sessions (Monday, August 13 and Tuesday, August 14) at the 2018 Academy of Management (AOM) Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL. The common logic of scholarship in the SIM Division is our shared interest in understanding responsible managerial behavior at the individual, organizational, and trans-organizational levels.
Paper and symposium proposals may choose to incorporate this year's conference theme: Improving Lives. It is easy to see that this year's theme clearly holds relevance within the SIM domain and has huge implications for the work we do in this division, as our trans-disciplinary research tries to understand how organizations can contribute to the betterment of society and "give back", even as they design competitive strategies. Submitters are encouraged to reflect on the conceptual and practical links their workshop offers to this idea of Improving Lives http://aom.org/annualmeeting/theme/
While we encourage proposals related to the conference theme, we also welcome non-thematic proposals about other topics within the SIM including, but not limited to, ethical decision-making, corporate social responsibility, corporate philanthropy, natural business ethics, stakeholder engagement and relations, environmental management, base-of-the-pyramid, social entrepreneurship, moral development, public policy, and corporate political strategy. PDW workshops may have a variety of structural forms, including roundtable discussions, interactive panels, site visits, service-learning activities, creative/artistic sessions, entrepreneurial incubators, and other activities that help SIM members develop professionally.
The SIM Division, with the help of various sponsors, has numerous awards including best paper, best student paper, best dissertation, best ethics paper, best sustainability paper, and best book, to name a few. The winners of these awards are announced at the SIM business meeting held during the conference.
Submission Details: The submission system opens up on November 28th and the deadline for papers and symposia is January 9, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. EDT. Please try to submit earlier if possible.
Please pay particular attention to all of the submission guidelines. The Program Chairs have agreed to apply them rigorously and reject non-conforming papers. All submissions must be made online at http://aom.org/annualmeeting/submission/ .
If you have any questions that cannot be clarified through the website, please contact Jill Brown, 2018 SIM Division Program Chair (SIM@bentley.edu), before December 15, 2017.
We look forward to seeing you in Chicago.
