This Symposium will be a conversation on defining the 21st century employment relationship between scholars and practitioners from human resources, law, and management, particularly corporate social responsibility (CSR), who are interested in re-conceptualizing the notion of "employee CSR." In particular, this Symposium will address the importance of firms "practicing what they preach" or, more formally, the alignment between employment policies ("what they say") and employment practices ("what they do"), and how this affects a broad notion of "employee CSR." In an increasingly interconnected world, a firm's misalignment between such factors can't stay secret for long thanks to the likes of Glassdoor and other websites or rankings where applicants, current employees, and former employees can anonymously review their employment experience. Thus, a firm's reputation as a "good place to work" operates as an interface between the organization, potential applicants, and even consumers. Our panelists, representing diverse theoretical, empirical, and practical perspectives, will explore principles, policies, and practices for garnering employee commitment, unleashing passion, fueling innovation, and maximizing performance.
Moreover, this Symposium will discuss employment policies and practices appropriate for dealing with primary stakeholders, particularly employees and customers, from "the Millennial generation" who take a more fluid view of organizational boundaries. Attracting and retaining Millennial talent requires firms to rethink how they manage employment relationships. Similarly, attracting and retaining Millennial consumers requires updated thinking about what it means to be a purpose-driven, socially responsible organization in the 21st century.
Please contact Jeana Wirtenberg if you have any suggested questions for discussion at this Symposium.
All the best,
Jeana Wirtenberg, Ph.D.
