  • 1.  PDW on Certified B Corps and Benefit Corporations

    Posted 06-27-2017 10:36

On behalf of Dr. Mark Starik,

Academy of Management members in the SIM and ENT divisions are enthusiastically invited to attend and participate in an Academy of Management Professional Development Workshop (PDW) on what may be one of the most significant global sustainability movements to be organized and developed in decades --- the effort to encourage and enable Certified B Corps and Benefit Corporations, that is, those for-profit entities whose mission and essence are to benefit multiple stakeholders in society and the natural environment with increased transparency and accountability.

After very brief individual introductions, the PDW proposers/co-coordinators will provide very brief introductions to the session topic and processes, the latter of which will include individual comments, small group conversations, and overall attendee highlights, lessons learned, and commitments. The output of the workshop is a set of ideas and plans at the individual, small group, and organizational (including Academy division) levels regarding the advisability of increasing the visibility and efficacy of Benefit Corporations/Certified B Corps within the next year (and beyond) in research, teaching, and practice.

The PDW Proposers and Co-Coordinators are: Mark Starik, American University; David Steingard, Saint Joseph's University; and William Clark, Drinker Biddle and principal author of the Model Benefit Corporation Legislation; and, the PDW Co-Experts are: Ian MacFarlane, EA Engineering; Wendy Stubbs, Monash University; Melissa Edwards, University of Technology-Sydney; Nancy Kurland, Franklin & Marshall College; and John Houseal, Founder of GIVN Water, an Atlanta-area B Corp.

Both between and at the end of the set of these very brief presentations, we encourage all PDW attendees to share their perspectives on B Corps/Benefit Corporations and to consider and commit to one or more of the research, teaching, or practice activities suggested by the gathering.  The session will be held Saturday morning, August 5th from 8am to 9:30pm in the Atlanta Marriott Marquis Room M102, and all Academy members are welcome to attend and actively participate (no RSVP or pre-registration required).   For further information, please contact Mark Starik at mark.starik@gmail.com

    Posted 09-25-2017 06:24

    Hi all,
Are you looking for some ideas on how to to integrate the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into your teaching this Academic Year?
You can find ready-made seminars to do exactly this in 'The Business Students' Guide to Sustainable Management'. The second edition of this textbook offers a wide range of teaching ideas and short overviews for the core curriulum in management /business education such as marketing and HR, but also some topics that might be of interest to anyone teaching in different faculties e.g. a chapter on 'System Thinking' or on 'Crowdsourcing for sustainable solutions'.
