The outpouring of emotion today over the loss of our ever-sunny, ever-stalwart, ever-encouraging friend has been heartening but not surprising.  Ann couldn't help but bring out everyone's warmest feelings.

What many may not know is that Ann had been dealing with Multiple Sclerosis for more than two decades.  I would say "battling" MS if she were anyone else, but with Ann it was more like "cordially negotiating" with MS.  She seldom talked about it, and seldom asked for or accepted accommodations-because "someone else might really need them."  And for many years she persevered.

Once I had absorbed the news yesterday, I was left with the urge to do something.  After talking with Ann's brother, I've decided to make a donation to the MS Society in Ann's honor in hopes that it makes some small difference in other MS victims' lives.  If you've been struck by the same urge and you'd like to do the same, just go to the website:  https://goo.gl/GRPVyD   If you'd like her family to know of the gift in her honor, please feel free to send the notice to my address below and I'll gather them up and send them to Ann's brother.  I'm sure that her family would be pleased.

    What a sad day.

Hi all: Ironically I am traveling to Newark today to give a seminar.  Obviously, Ann's passing will be weighing heavily on all of us throughout the day and beyond.  I did not know Ann well, but I served on a panel with her in Philadelphia a few years back and we became re-acquainted. As others have said, she was always kind, caring, and genuine.  Some of you may know that the Center for Global Leadership at Villanova for which I serve as Faculty Director is the financial sponsor of the SIM division Sumner Marcus award which Ann received at AOM.  As part of that sponsorship, we provide a $500 donation to the charity or nonprofit of the recipient's choice.  Because we did not have a chance to speak with Ann about her wishes, I intend to follow Lori's lead and provide this donation - and some of my own - directly to the MS organization her brother has recommended.  Jonathan Doh

    Hello all:

I really don't have anything to add to all that has been said about Ann; she was indeed an outstanding scholar, a wonderful person, and a dear friend.  As people are thinking about ways to remember and honor Ann, I did want to point out that she wrote an excellent case about an experimental MS drug (Betaseron) developed in the 1990s.  Although it did not cure MS, it appeared to significantly improve the quality of life of patients with MS.   When this drug was quickly approved by the FDA, there was a tremendous demand for it but a limited supply.  Thus the ethical dilemmas for the company (Berlex Labs, a subsidiary of Schering, AG) included how to price the drug and how to determine who would get access to it and who would not.

I have used this case on a number of occasions in the past and it has always led to great, and in fact sometimes very heated, discussions about issues such as "price gouging" in times of shortages, the fairness of the market system versus other methods of allocating scarce products/resources, and so on.  Interestingly the company kept the price much lower than they could have charged and decided to allocate the drugs primarily on the basis of a lottery system.

For anyone who cares to use the case, the citation and access information is below:

Buchholtz, A. 1996.  The Betaseron decision. Case Research Journal, 16(1): 1-5.

(Note, there is also a "B" version of the case and teaching notes.)    These can all be accessed at the following site: http://www.thecasecentre.org/educators/products/view?id=78569
