Please join us for this Showcase Symposium on Opening Planetary Governance: From Corporate to National to Global (Earth System) Governance with a keynote address by Prof. Extraordinaire, University of South Africa, Dr. Mervyn King, Chair of the International Integrated Reporting Council.

Governance today is not just a corporate or organizational phenomenon; in fact, governance occurs at many levels and in many different forms, including in networks, and at local, national, regional. Increasingly, governance is a global issue, as nation states seem to be losing their governance capacity while companies and other private actors are enhancing theirs. Taking governance as the ways in which societies make decisions and share power, this symposium will discuss the opening or emerging governance structures at levels ranging from corporate to state to global or earth system governance.  Global governance thought leader and author of the innovative King III report in South Africa which mandates integrated reporting and other progressive governance structures for companies listed on the Johannesburg stock exchange, Prof. Mervyn King, Professor Extraordinaire at the University of South Africa, who is also chair of the International Integrated Reporting Council and a global leader on governance issues, will keynote the symposium, reflecting on the emergence of integrated reporting and other governance mechanisms from his position as Chair of the International Integrated Reporting Council.

Panelists will then bring several different perspectives on governance to the discussion.  Christian Vögtlin (University of Zurich) will discuss the potential of planetary/global governance schemes to encourage responsible innovations aimed at sustainability.  Jonathan Doh (Villanova University) will discuss collaborative governance as an integrated model to forge strong, sustainable governance systems at multiple levels.  Derick De Jongh (University of Pretoria) will discuss the ways in which integrated reporting and other progressive governance mechanisms are shaping South African business and leadership.  Laura Albareda (Deusto Business School) will focus on the global commons as part of Earth system governance as a means of managing the global commons, global markets, and sustainability.  Sandra Waddock (Boston College), co-organizer with Derick De Jongh, will provide an overview, introduce panelists, and moderate the discussion.  After presentations, we will engage the audience in a conversation about emerging global governance structures and issues, including feasibility.

Please feel free to distribute this announcement widely to your networks.
