    Dear colleagues:

We would like to invite you to our PDW (session 207) at the Academy of Management Conference, Anaheim, 2016, sponsored by BPS, IM, OMT, AAM, and ITC divisions: Institutions and Corporate Governance in East Asia.

    Time: Saturday, August 6, 8:00AM-10:30AM

    Location: Hilton Anaheim, Catalina 5

    Panel Participants

    Christina Ahmadjian, Hitotsubashi University

    Michael Carney, Concordia University

    Richard Carney, Australian National University

    Ulrike Schaede, UC San Diego

Markus David Taussig, National University of Singapore

This PDW will examine the corporate governance effects of market-based and non-market based institutions in East Asia. The heterogeneity of institutional environments in East Asia permits rich insights regarding the interplay of forces external and internal to the firm. The goal of the PDW is to use cross-disciplinary insights based on empirical observations from East Asia to develop a sharper understanding of institutional boundaries for corporate governance practices to shape investor-manager relations and consequently improve firm competitiveness. The following questions will guide the presentations and discussion:

    1.      What distinguishes corporate governance in East Asia from other parts of the world?

    2.      To what extent do institutions -- market-based and non-market-based -- act as complements or substitutes in East Asia?

    3.      How do institutions interact with corporate governance to affect firm competitiveness in East Asia?

Format: Brief introduction from the participating scholars of basic patterns in governance practices, followed by a moderated panel and break-out sessions with the scholars to consider the trends in market and non-market institutions that underlie the evolving patterns.

We look forward to having you engaged in the panel. See you soon in Anaheim!
