Dear all,
I would like to develop a short but convincing outline of a course on the History and Philosophy of Economics and Business for Bachelor students in Economics and Business. However, I know there are excellent courses on this topic out there already, from people who have more expertise on this than I have. My questions is:
- For each of the following 4 topics, which handbooks or texts could I use?
- Would anyone want to share other syllabus material?
- Is there a handbook that I could use for the entire course (or most of it), for students to read?
[I can find material myself, but I can't read it all to evaluate it and pick out the best]
TOPIC 1
Lectures 1 and 2: Relevant philosophy of science concepts (e.g., explanation versus description; formal versus empirical methods), related to scientific methodologies (e.g., theory development, hypothesis testing, quantitative vs qualitative methods).
TOPIC 2
Lectures 3 and 4: History of Economics and Business: pre-18th century; Malthus, Hume and Smith; history of business theory; history of business ethics.
TOPIC 3
Lecture 5: Human Nature in Economic Theory: How assumptions about human nature have shaped economic and business theories. E.g., homo economicus versus recent developments in behavioral economics; economics after Darwin...
TOPIC 4
Lecture 6: Moral and Political Justifications for economic and business theories: Throughout the ages, recent developments.
