Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
    Special Issue on Laudato Si'

Pope Francis' encyclical, Laudato Si', is neither the first papal encyclical to address the importance of sustainability nor the first attempt to link sustainability to a moral imperative. However, it does represent an effort by the Holy See to reach well beyond Roman Catholics to engender support on an issue of global concern. Moreover, his focus on sustainability is directly related to the long-standing Roman Catholic commitment to support and assist the poor and downtrodden.

The Journal of Management for Global Sustainability (JMGS) is calling for papers for a special issue on the Pope's encyclical and global sustainability. The intent is to encourage papers from a broad range of disciplines that look at the significance of the document on the continuing effort to stabilize the planet and its biodiversity. Questions might include, butare not limited to the following.

 How distinctive is the Pope's call for action in support of sustainable practices?
 Does the moral authority of the Bishop of Rome carry any special significance for non-Roman Catholics? If so, how can that influence be channeled?
 Does the Pope's argument compliment the efforts of existing secular groups espousing sustainable practices? Can collaborative efforts be undertaken to strengthen the movement?
 To what degree does the encyclical echo the scientific foundations of lay organizations seeking a more sustainable world? Does it introduce new arguments or insights?
 Are there arguments in the document that extend the traditional definition of sustainability?
 What actions would provide an operational foundation for the encyclical's implementation?
 How likely is the leadership of the various dioceses of the Roman Catholic Church to undertake concerted efforts to implement the Pope's vision? In other words, to what extent will Pope Francis find support for his leadership among bishops and other Roman Catholic Church leadership?
 What are various universities and business schools doing to align their dialogues and actions with the invitations in Laudato Si' and what are Jesuit and Roman Catholic universities and business schools in particular doing?
 What new possibilities for dialogue and action might Laudato Si' and Pope Francis' moral leadership make available for those institutions and their leaders?
 How are non-Catholic universities and educational institutions responding to the calls for action in Laudato Si'?
 How does the moral theme of the call for action in Laudato Si relate to the commonly presented "business case for global sustainability" (and to the "career case for global sustainability")?
 Do the words in Laudato Si suggest that Jesuit educational institutions might want to explore the possibility of adding some version of "care for the planet" ("care for God's creation") to the three traditional tenets of Jesuit education?
As indicated, the list above is not exhaustive. JMGS welcomes all articles that demonstrate significance for global sustainability.
