2013 SIM Division Professional Development Workshops: Call for Proposals
The Social Issues in Management (SIM) Division seeks proposals for the Professional Development Workshop (PDW) sessions (Friday, August 9th and Saturday, August 10th) at the 2013 Academy of Management (AOM) Annual Meeting in Lake Buena Vista, FL. Professional development workshops are managed separately from the All Academy Theme Program and the Scholarly Program's paper sessions, symposia, and caucuses.
The theme for this year's AOM conference-Capitalism in Question-offers possibilities for interesting SIM PDWs. The 2013 call for papers notes that:
"The recent economic and financial crises, austerity, and unemployment, and the emergence of many economic, social, and environmental protest movements around the world have put back on the agenda some big questions about this vision: What kind of economic system would this better world be built on? Would it be a capitalist one? If so, what kind of capitalism? If not, what are the alternatives? Although most of our work does not usually ask such "big" questions, the assumptions we make about the corresponding answers deeply influence our research, teaching, and service."
Research and teaching in the SIM division often asks such big questions. Topics such as the costs and benefits of market competition, the treatment of employees, the role of government, and the place of business in creating a better world (all referred to in the AOM call for papers) are frequently addressed within the various subfields of SIM.
We especially encourage proposals related to the conference theme, but we welcome proposals for any workshops, tours, site visits, service learning, conversations, town hall forums, etc. that help SIM members experience and develop their professional skills relative to topics within the SIM domain. These topics include: the reciprocal impacts of management behaviors on diverse stakeholders of businesses, business ethics, corporate (social) responsibility, social performance, stakeholder relations, governance, corporate political strategy, lobbying, government regulation, corporate corruption and compliance.
PDWs are meant to be different from the Scholarly Program. PDWs should not be similar to, for example, presenter symposia in which a series of academic papers is presented with minimal audience involvement. Rather, PDWs should promote the professional development-either in terms of teaching or research-of attendees. PDWs that focus on skill development and/or that are innovative in the questions that are discussed by participants will be especially favored in the development of the program, as are PDWs that are likely to appeal to a broad audience. Further, in keeping with a practice started by 2012 PDW Chair Mike Barnett, all PDW organizers will be expected to submit some sort of record-preferably a short report of outcomes/conclusions/takeaways-that would then be posted to the SIM website.
The submission deadline for PDW proposals is the same deadline for all conference program submissions: January 15th, 2013, at 5pm EST. Earlier submissions are encouraged. All submissions must be made online at http://submissions.aomonline.org/2013/. Please also email a copy of your proposal to Harry Van Buren at sim2013pdw@gmail.com. Please contact Harry Van Buren by December 14th, 2012 if you would like to discuss proposal ideas or if you have any questions regarding PDW sessions.
