East-West Perspectives on Responsible Management Education: Prospects for Convergence and Divergence

Sunday, Aug 14 2011 1:10PM - 2:40PM at San Antonio Convention Center in Room 201

    Panelist: Hsu O'Keefe; Pace University
Panelist: Jonas Haertle; PRME Secretariat / United Nations Global Compact Office
Panelist: Andreas Rasche; University of Warwick
Panelist: Yong-Seung Park; Kyung Hee University
    Panelist: Mitsuhiro Umezu; Keio University
Panelist: Mary Catherine Gentile; Babson College

The Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), launched in 2007 by the United Nations Global Compact and several co-convening institutions, encourage business schools across the globe to incorporate concepts of corporate sustainability and social responsibility in their management education and research. The panel will compare and contrast samples of West-East PRME signatories to identify the similarities and differences in their approaches to responsible management education and research. Panelists will assess the extent to which Asian academia are adopting the Principles in accordance with the Western perspective (convergence) or are adapting them to incorporate the Asian ways of thinking (divergence) in order to reflect the local reality. They will also examine ideas being developed in the East that can be of relevance to PRME initiatives in the West. This articulation can be of benefit to both management educators and researchers who are, or may become, actively involved in the PRME.
