Title: Applying feminist deconstruction to research on business and its environments

    Date/Time: Saturday, August 7, 8:00-11:00 a.m.

Location: Queen Elizabeth Hotel, Hochelaga 6

Presenters and Facilitators: Susan S. Case, Case Western Reserve University; Ante Glavas, University of Notre Dame; Jamie R. Hendry, Bucknell University; Garima Sharma, Case Western Reserve University

Abstract: Research questions in the realm of business and its environments can be enhanced by the theories and approaches of feminist research. Using Feminist Deconstruction to revisit the questions around the relationship of business and environment is a unique approach. Deconstruction can bring forth the underlying assumptions, dichotomies and hierarchies implicit in these questions. Having identified these assumptions a feminist lens can open alternate meanings to the constructs (like responsibility, norms and ethics) so that keeping with this year's theme of Dare to Care, our research questions are enriched by what Gilligan (1977) describes as an ethic of care.  In this hands-on workshop, participants will be introduced to theories of feminist deconstruction as a tool to build knowledge. They will then work on applying these theories to their own research projects.  In particular, we will share examples of deconstructing research questions that focus on business and its environments. We will then work with the participants to visit the underlying assumptions of their questions and experiment with alternate framings using a feminist lens.
