Social Issues in Management Division 2011 Doctoral Consortium
Academy of Management annual meeting, San Antonio, Texas
    August 11 and 12, 2011

    Co-chairs:

Harry Van Buren, University of New Mexico, VanBuren@mgt.unm.edu

    Jill Brown, Lehigh University, jgb207@Lehigh.EDU

All doctoral students working in the general area of social issues in management (SIM)-including but not limited to business ethics, corporate social responsibility, business and government-are invited to apply to participate in the Academy of Management 2011 Social Issues in Management Division doctoral consortium. In addition to students who focus on social issues in management research, students whose primary research area is outside of SIM but who also emphasize social issues (e.g., ethics or business and society relations) in their work are welcome. SIM has a history of encouraging cross-fertilization with scholars from other divisions.

The consortium serves as an ideal opportunity for doctoral students to begin to converse about scholarship and teaching with a wider community of scholars in social issues in management beyond their Universities and doctoral programs. The theme of this year's consortium is "Managing Relationships," which includes relationships with one's dissertation committee, colleagues, research collaborators, journal editors, and families. A variety of leading SIM scholars will participate as panelists and coaches, and participating students are typically drawn from a range of countries and backgrounds. While offering abundant networking opportunities, the consortium content focuses on developing research and teaching skills and strategies, and on achieving a balance between career and other dimensions of life.

The consortium begins on Thursday evening (August 11, starting at 5:30 pm) with opportunities to get acquainted with fellow participants and SIM scholars. This session will be followed by a casual dinner, which will allow participants an opportunity to get to know each other. Friday (August 12) will be full of additional learning, with ample time for reflection and discussion. We'll spend time in sessions devoted to the crafts of teaching and research. We will continue the tradition of pairing consortium participants with SIM scholars to provide feedback on students' research ideas. The afternoon sessions will focus on various aspects of managing one's relationships within an academic career, and the consortium will finish by 6:00 pm on Friday.

To apply, students need to obtain a faculty sponsor and submit an application form. Applicants should ask that sponsoring faculty e-mail the consortium chairs with a one paragraph recommendation. In addition, students must submit an abstract describing their dissertation (no more than one page single-spaced).  Application forms and more information will soon be available at the SIM website (http://sim.aomonline.org). All submissions should be sent to Harry Van Buren at VanBuren@mgt.unm.edu and to Jill Brown at jgb207@Lehigh.EDU. While we will give priority to those students who are near to finishing their study and who have not previously attended a SIM doctoral consortium, we realize that students may benefit by attending a consortium earlier in their course of study and by attending more than once. Therefore, we encourage applications from previous participants as well.

Space is limited, so it is essential to submit an application and recommendation no later than the deadline of June 30, 2010. We hope to see you in San Antonio. Please feel free to send inquiries for additional information to either Harry or Jill at the email addresses above.
