    Dear Colleagues,

    I am delighted to announce that Bucknell University seeks a qualified candidate for the MacArthur Professorship in Public Policy.

    MacARTHUR PROFESSORSHIP IN PUBLIC POLICY

    Bucknell University's Departments of Economics and Political Science and the School of Management invite applications for a newly created open-rank, tenure-track faculty position to begin August 2014. The successful candidate will be committed to teaching undergraduate social science methods using quantitative and/or qualitative approaches, as well as conducting research and/or teaching in the area of sustainability, possibly in the areas of energy or health policy. The MacArthur Professor ideally will involve students in addressing pressing 21st century public policy challenges, particularly as they impact underrepresented populations.

    Teaching expectations: Five courses per year, including:

    • Two courses in either qualitative and/or quantitative social science research design.
    • One course for the general education curriculum. This could be an interdisciplinary course involving the social sciences, the natural sciences, the humanities, and/or engineering.
    • Two electives in the candidate's applied policy area.

    General expectations of the Professor include:

      • Engagement with scholarly questions pertinent to sustainability, which is defined broadly by the University's sustainability initiative as comprising economic, environmental, social, and cultural issues. Both health policy and energy policy fall within this definition. The position includes a budget to support research.
      • Work with undergraduate students to conduct health or energy policy research focused on key challenges.
      • Active participation in the Bucknell Institute for Public Policy program development for the wider university community, such as initiating symposia and lecture series.
      • The MacArthur budget will be partially devoted to this program development.

      Qualifications:

        • Completed PhD in an appropriate discipline for candidate's teaching and scholarship;
        • Established record as a teacher/scholar;
        • Background in quantitative &/or qualitative social science research methods;
        • A scholarly focus on energy or health policy;
        • Proven ability to work successfully with a diverse student body in applied public policy and social science research design.

        Bucknell is a highly selective, predominately undergraduate, private university with approximately 3600 students enrolled in the Colleges of Arts & Sciences and Engineering. Bucknell is located in close proximity to the Marcellus Shale natural gas play and to Geisinger Health Systems, a nationally recognized leader in evidence-based medicine. Bucknell's current fundraising campaign includes two themes which indicate its strong commitment to these policy areas: the Human Health Initiative and the Sustainability Initiative.

        Bucknell University believes that students learn best in a diverse, inclusive community and is therefore committed to academic excellence through diversity in its faculty, staff, and students. Thus, we seek candidates who are committed to Bucknell's efforts to create a climate that fosters the growth and development of a diverse student body. We welcome applications from members of groups that have been historically underrepresented in higher education. Bucknell is an EEO employer.
