PLEASE EXCUSE CROSS-POSTINGS

Dear SIM-L members,
Please join us to celebrate IABS's 20th Anniversary
at the 2009 IABS CONFERENCE
Aspen/Snowmass, Colorado
Thursday, June 18 - Sunday, June 21
Although we are continuing the Thursday-Sunday conference schedule, I encourage you to get to Aspen/Snowmass as soon as you can -- come on Wednesday if you can! -- because we're getting an early start. This year's conference theme is "Thinking like a mountain: Nature, Humans, and Management." I selected Aspen/Snowmass as the conference site because it offers so many opportunities for people to do things that bring them into contact with as unspoiled a natural environment as we have in an accessible area of the United States. With that in mind, we have scheduled several OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES for Thursday: at least one will be all day, and two or three others will be afternoon-only. They are likely to include hiking (for a range of abilities; possibly full-day Thursday; half-day both Thursday and Friday), horseback riding (yes, they're very gentle), whitewater rafting (probably full-day Thursday, half-day Friday), mountain biking (downhill), and/or a jeep trip. Another opportunity to partake in outdoor activities will be available Friday in case you either can't make it Thursday or would like to do a second activity. Each activity will include an educational component about the local environment, including some discussion of the challenges it faces. Then on Saturday morning, we will have session in which attendees can reflect with one another on what we saw, heard, felt, thought, and learned; how such experiences might inform our own perspectives regarding human economic and social pursuits; how we might better engage our students with the natural environment; and how we might consider bringing nonhuman nature into our research. Registration for the outdoor activities will begin next week; I'll send another email to conference registrants when that link is available.
- Opening reception on Thursday evening
- Breakfasts on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
- Morning breaks on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
- 20th Anniversary Luncheon on Saturday
- Banquet on Saturday night (including transportation)
- CD of the Proceedings
Early registration runs through May 1. The fee is $395, but we are offering a $50 discount for the first 20 students to register. Starting May 2 and running through June 6, the fee will be $445. After June 6, the onsite registration fee is $495. All registrants must be members; the annual fee is $100, which also entitles you to the full benefits of IABS membership, including receiving our quarterly journal Business & Society.
You can make your HOTEL RESERVATIONS using the following link --
AIR TRANSPORTATION is available into the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport, just 15 minutes from Snowmass. United, Delta, and Frontier Airlines serve the airport.
If you are interested in having us try to arrange CHARTER BUS transportation from Denver, please contact me before March 31. We know the bus would handle 8-11 passengers at a time, take 4 hours to make the trip, and cost around $60 per person. Sounds like it could be a fun getting-to-know-you and bonding experience! We are not guaranteeing that we can arrange this, but if enough people are interested, we'll look into it further. (Note: By contacting me, you are not obligating yourself to take advantage of such a service; you're just letting me know that you might be interested.)
I look forward to seeing all of you at Aspen/Snowmass for IABS 20th Anniversary!
