The SIM division, in conjunction with the Management History and Management Education divisions, would like to invite you to the following Showcase Symposium on Monday, August 13 from 1:15PM-2:45PM at the Marriott Chicago Downtown – Magnificent Mile in the Addison Marriott Ballroom:
Lofty Ambitions, Unfulfilled Promise: Business Education, Professionalism, and Ethical Leadership
Duff McDonald's 2017 book, "The Golden Passport", echoes many of the themes discussed by Rakesh Khurana in his 2007 book, "From Higher Aims to Hired Hands", and his 2008 SIM/SBE Keynote Address, including the "professionalization project" undertaken by university-based business schools to create legitimacy for management as a practice and business education. The appearance of Mr. McDonald's book calls into question whether we, the academic community, took Professor Khurana's critique seriously and have done much to remedy the problems he identified over a decade ago. Given the relative importance of the problems with management practice and management education discussed by McDonald, Khurana, and others in today's political, social, and economic climate, the purpose of this panel symposium is to engage a group of panelists in a formal, moderated, interactive discussion of (1) whether management can still become a profession; (2) how management education can help bring about benefits to society if management can never live up to being a profession; and (3) the possibility that management is something different altogether - not a profession, but also not free from professional responsibility.
The panel, which will be moderated by Jason Pattit, will bring together a diverse group of commentators from academia and beyond, including Duff McDonald, Rakesh Khurana, J.C. Spender, Joanne Ciulla, and Ken Goodpaster. The final 30 minutes of the symposium will be dedicated to a dialogue with the audience, so please come with questions for the panel. We look forward to seeing you in Chicago!
