Why Do Firms Exist and Whom Do They Serve?
The panel centers on the provocative results of a study by Michael Witt and Gordon Redding, "The Spirit of Capitalism: German, Japanese, and US Senior Executive Perceptions of Why Firms Exist."
The samples of senior executives in the three countries provided markedly different responses to questions about the role and rationale for the firm. Do firms serve shareholders, employees, customers, seek to produce efficiently, or do they exist to serve society or community ends? How can it be that firms exist for different purposes -- what happens to the posited great anchor of shareholder value if firms are managed without it as the primary guiding end?
Prof. Witt will present his paper, followed by a roundtable of observations and commentary by Ann Buchholz, Stephen Brammer, Barry Mitnick, Jean Pasquero, and Lori Ryan. Dialogue and discussion with the audience will follow. Please join us.
